Theft is a major problem that is
costing the general public, businesses, insurance companies
and law enforcement departments billions of dollars each
year. Current findings show:
- A burglary occurs every 11 seconds in
the U.S.
- A computer is stolen every 43 seconds
in the U.S.
- Theft of antiques and collectables
worldwide is reported to be valued over $30 billion
annually.
- Studies estimate employee theft and
dishonesty cost U.S. businesses between $60 billion and
$120 billion per year.
- Insurance fraud is reported to be a $30
billion problem in America alone.
- It is reported that for every 1,000
students there are 79 thefts in a school.
- In 1999 it was reported that 201,428
bicycles were stolen, however it is estimated that this
amount is closer to 1 million as most stolen bicycles are
not reported.
- In 2000 it was reported that 5400
thefts of heavy equipment occurred.
- A vehicle is stolen every 7 seconds
with total losses valued at $7.8 billion annually.
- Marine theft is estimated to be at $40
million per year, however a figure of over $100 million is
more realistic. Unfortunately no agency keeps an up to
date record on marine theft, however it is estimated that
up to 27,000 marine thefts occur each year.
